Story behind the feature
Libkovice was a town that was demolished by the coal company Hlubina to make way for a new coal mine. The Coal companies in Czechoslovakia tore down more than 100 cities and towns in Northern Bohemia during the communist era (including the 800 year old city of Most with about 60,000 people living in it to make way for an open pit coal mine). But everyone thought it would stop in the new Democratic government. This is the story of the first attempt of people fighting to save a town from the coal mines from 1992 through 1994. Northern Bohemia is famous for it's environmental disasters and general bad health and environment. It once was known as the one of the most beautiful parts of Europe. Many of Europes most famous musicians, writers and artists used to come there for their health in the summers. Including, Beethoven, Goethe, Mozart and many more.
